The day following the abrupt cancellation of Lauryn Hill and the Fugees’ U.S. reunion tour, with ticket refunds issued without clear justification, the artist released a statement late on Wednesday detailing the causes behind the scrapped tour, pinpointing it to insufficient ticket sales. Hill contends that she understands the root of the lagging sales: the aftermath of what she labels as “clickbait headlines” following her cancellation of the latter part of a tour the previous autumn.
According to Hill, the media’s “sensationalizing” of the terminated shows towards the end of 2023 fostered an atmosphere where potential attendees were hesitant to purchase tickets for the planned 2024 tour, which was scheduled to kick off this coming Friday.
Hill also highlighted that the European concerts she and the Fugees have on the calendar for October are proceeding as intended, indicating that the enthusiasm for these reunion performances abroad remains undiminished.
“In a challenging decision, we’ve opted to cancel our impending North American tour dates,” Hill expresses in her statement. “However, the gigs in the UK and Europe are PROCEEDING AS SCHEDULED.”
She elaborates: “Last year, I sustained an injury that required the postponement of several of my performances. Unfortunately, some media outlets’ tendency to indulge in sensationalism and create headlines for clicks appears to have crafted a story that has negatively impacted ticket sales for our North American tour leg.
