‘It Ends With Us’, starring Blake Lively (who also produced) and Justin Baldoni (who also directed and executive produced), saw a stellar opening at the box office, partly fueled by online speculations of a rift between the co-stars.
“Not all is as it appears,” a source from the set told People. “There’s more to this story than meets the eye. The principal cast and [author] Colleen Hoover want nothing to do with him.”
A source close to Baldoni informed the same outlet that the drama stemmed from “creative differences” that had been “blown out of proportion.
” The source alleged that Lively “aims to direct the next movie, sidelining him and securing the rights from Colleen.”
What is the film about? ‘It Ends With Us’ is an adaptation of Hoover’s 2016 bestselling novel about a love triangle involving florist Lily Bloom (Lively), neurosurgeon Ryle (Baldoni), and her first love, Atlas (Brandon Sklenar). It is a romantic drama that addresses the sensitive subject of domestic abuse. Critics have mixed opinions on its portrayal in the film, but audiences have responded favorably, giving it an A- on CinemaScore and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes as of Monday afternoon.
In its opening weekend, the Sony Pictures film grossed $50 million at the box office, screening at 3,611 locations in North America, and another$30 million internationally. Domestically, it trailed just behind Lively’s husband Ryan Reynolds’s film ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, in which Lively also made a cameo appearance.
‘It Ends With Us’ had a “phenomenal opening for a dramatic romance film,” according to David Gross of movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research.
